Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr - You Don't Have to Be A Star (1976)
By request Only. McCoo first reached stardom as a founding member of the Fifth Dimension. That group was formed in Los Angeles in 1965 as the Versatiles, and enjoyed a number of Top 10 hits between 1967 and 1972, including "Up, Up And Away", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" and "Wedding Bell Blues". McCoo married Fifth Dimension member Billy Davis Jnr in 1969, and together they left the group in 1975 to form an act as a duo.
Signed to ABC Records, their first single, "I Hope We Get To Love In Time", was a minor chart entry in 1976, but the album of the same title yielded "You Don't Have To Be A Star (To Be In My Show)", a number 1 hit. The couple then hosted their own television show for six weeks in 1977.
They released two further albums together in 1977 and 1978, and both recorded solo albums in the 80s. In 1981, McCoo hosted the popular television musical programme Solid Gold, with which she remained until 1984, returning once more in 1987-88. She released a gospel-orientated album in 1991.
