Julia and Company

Julia & Company - Breakin' Down (Sugar Samba) 1984
Julia McGrit was born in Rowland, North Carolina, USA in 1965 where her father was a member of the Dixie Hummingbirds for five years. While taking professional singing lessons and studying at North Carolina School of Arts, she met David Ylvisaker.

A few years later they decided to form a group, Julia & Co, and after a brief spell in Boston moved the operation to Washington. While the group established itself Julia took the role as understudy to Jennifer Holiday in the stage musical Dreamgirls (1983), but left when Julia & Co was offered a nationwide tour with comedian Richard Pryor. When Jennifer left the Dreamgirls Julia took over the role while still maintaining dates with Julia & Co. In 1983 the group (Julia, David, Amy Keys and tour musicians), released a debut single 'Breaking Down (UK Top 20, 1984) and follow-up I'm So Happy' (UK Top 75, 1985) - Ralph Tee
