Cissy Houston - Jumping Jack Flash (1969)Soon. From the UK TV show The Price Of Fame, with Alan Price and Georgie Fame. Born Emily Drinkard, 30 September 1933, Newark, New Jersey, USA. Houston's singing career began in a family gospel group, the Drinkard Singers, which also featured her nieces Dee Dee and Dionne Warwick.
The trio was later employed as backing singers for many artists, including Solomon Burke and Wilson Pickett. While Dionne began recording as a solo artist, Houston continued this backroom work.
Between 1967 and 1970 she was lead vocalist with the Sweet Inspirations, an impressive quartet who sang on countless releases, primarily for Atlantic Records. Houston's subsequent solo releases included "I'll Be There" (1970), "Be My Baby" (1971) and "Think It Over" (1978), but her career failed to match expectations and was later eclipsed by the success of her daughter Whitney Houston. Cissy has now returned chiefly to the gospel fold, as a major figure in the New Hope Baptist Church Choir of Newark, New Jersey, although in 1992 she shared a secular Shanachie CD with Chuck Jackson.
